"City and Architectural Heritage of the 20th Century: 1910-1999" is the theme of the Research Grants Programme in the Field of City and Architecture.

Several Portuguese Municipalities have set themselves up as partners in this National Programme which keeps a special focus on the role of Architecture in the protection and preservation of the national cultural heritage with the realisation of an unprecedented work of technical and scientific research in the areas of Architecture and/or Heritage, namely: Cascais, Funchal, Mafra, Maia, Matosinhos, Porto, Santa Maria da Feira and Vila Nova de Gaia.

The Research Grants Programme also counts on the Millennium BCP Foundation as patron and with the Order of Architects as scientific partner.

The Millennium Programme - Research Grants "City and Architecture" consists in supporting the development of unpublished technical and scientific studies that demonstrate the uniqueness and excellence of the 20th century built heritage, relevant contribution to the enrichment of the municipalities' heritage map, support for the Inventory of the 20th century architectural heritage, contribution in drawing up strategies for safeguarding the heritage, participation in creating new and innovative tourist and cultural routes and circuits and facilitating the territorial employability of young people.

The deadline for submitting applications has already ended and the young scholarship holders of the programme have been selected.  The programme contemplates one grant per municipality, however, due to the quality of the proposals presented, Maia and Vila Nova de Gaia have awarded an additional grant, resulting in 10 research projects on architectural heritage of the cities.

The jury will accompany the young scholarship holders until the conclusion of their work, foreseen for the end of December, after which there will be an itinerant exhibition through the 8 municipalities.
